Dewey Beach

We had such a good time in Delaware that we decided to go again--mainly because while we were there, people kept telling us how amazing it would be during Memorial Day Weekend. In particular, Dewey Beach was supposed to be even better than Rehoboth Beach.

I had never been to Dewey Beach before, but read that it was supposed to be like spring break for adults. Indeed, there were people there of all ages, into their 50s. It was however, exactly like the stereotypical college spring break, complete with funnels, poor dye jobs, and red solo cups. It is fun only if you have a quiet place to retreat to afterwards, but I suppose I might be getting old. Someone said it was better to go in August because it wouldn't be as crowded. After all, we left New York to escape the crowd. According to our informant, in August it's less crowded because the student crowd has to start their semester. Then the older crowd that hits on students also doesn't go because the students are gone. It's still warm enough to go to the beach, and there will be no lines to get into restaurants or bars.

We ended up staying more in Rehoboth because we were more motivated by food, in particular the gumbo at Purple Parrot. We found another happy hour seafood place that is even better than the first one we went to--it's called Fins. In general, their seafood was more fresh.

This time, it was finally warm enough to go to the beach. The water was freezing, but since I love to swim I went in anyway. It was basically me and a bunch of crazy children. I noticed that there was a pipe nearby, so possibly there was sewage going into the water, but the kids looked okay so I figured it was fine. The first time I dived in I got bowled over by an enormous icy wave.

There is a lot of live music by the beach, many cover bands, all of whom were pretty good. The drink special is called an orange crush, and it basically is made of orange juice, orange flavored alcohol, and something bubbly--orange soda perhaps? There was also a very good Bloody Mary Bar, with over 100 different types of toppings (dressing? addition? anyhow see the photo).
